Internet Marketing: Think Big, Start Small, Fail Fast & Succeed!

Very few businesses exist in a vacuum, and even start-ups come from somewhere.

Every day, thousands of new companies venture out onto the web. Whether it’s a dorm-room start-up or a new offering from a Fortune 500, each new venture seeks to drive eyeballs, gather clicks, win conversions, and generate sales through internet marketing.

And whether the new venture is a main street business or the latest offering of some multi-national firm, the truth is that there is a wealth of opportunities to build a great online business so long as one does not allow the perfect to be the enemy of the good.

With that in mind, allow me to share my three-step view on how to build a great online business:

Step One:  Think Big
This is pretty self-explanatory.  Few people start out with a mediocre vision or a plan to build a tiny business. Thinking big allows people to free themselves from constraints and get as many great ideas, including internet marketing ideas, on the table.

It also serves to get people excited and engaged in a new idea. That said, there’s a difference between thinking big and pursuing pie in the sky ideas.  That gets us to our next step.

Step Two:  Start Small
I once met a guy who wanted to revolutionize the study aid industry by changing the way that content was created, marketed, consumed, and purchased.  He wasn’t alone in his view, but he was pretty uniquely positioned to get something done.

He’d been in the industry for decades and knew it inside and out.  He wanted to raise a few million dollars to launch a new venture.  He clearly was thinking big.

When I asked him what inspired the idea, he told me his former employer had just discontinued selling a series of very successful Advanced Placement (AP) study books for high school students and reverted copyright to the authors.

After a bit of discussion, I learned that he could buy out those copyrights and sell secure PDF copies of these books on Amazon for a few thousand dollars and test the waters.

That wasn’t big enough for him.  A year later, someone had started even smaller—buying warehouses full of printed materials and liquidating them on eBay, generating a few hundred thousand dollars in sales—while this guy I met was still looking for funding.

There’s no shame in starting small.  No big successful company ever started out that way.

Step Three:  Fail Fast
It’s a cold, hard fact that failure and hardship are the means by which people learn and grow.  Failure teaches us what not to do and hardship allows us to truly value the rewards we earn.  The beauty of starting small is that our failures are then equally small.

The key here is to understand when an experiment has run its course, cut bait and move on.  Small failures are easier to walk away from as there’s often less of an emotional desire to “turn things around” or throw good money after bad.

The goal is not to succeed the first, second, or third time but to identify ten or twenty things that might work and then cycle through them as quickly as possible.  Think of it as A/B split testing for a new venture.

Step Four:  Succeed
This isn’t meant to be funny; very few ventures succeed in their first iteration.  Success is a process of trial and error.  The key to success is longevity, and unless you’ve got a bottomless pit of money (or an unlimited corporate budget), you’ll need to stretch your resources as far as possible.

In my own travels, I’ve had more than my fair share of clients who have turned to me after having dumped enough money to buy a house into a failed digital venture.  In many cases, my clients believed that they had a flawed strategy or a bad idea.  In most cases, it was more about execution.

Sometimes people are shocked to hear that a few free web services and a five page micro site can serve as a pretty good internet marketing starting point for a new venture. Consumer grade web services may not be scalable, but until you know that your venture will succeed, what’s there to scale?

Google Sniper Pulls In Passive Profits, With Zero Traffic Generation...

It’s always refreshing to see new strategies to make money online. However, the majority of the time I’m pretty disappointed with the results.

When I was recommended to buy Google Sniper 2.0, I thought it would be another system that just left me disappointed, but the proof and success stories tipped me to buy it.

A quick Google search for testimonials and by watching the sales video it was clear that this system has worked wonders for other people, and it’s actually generated the most online success stories than any other system/course to date. It was a no-brainer to give it a shot personally.

At the time in my Internet marketing journey, I was pretty lost as to what road to head down. Google Sniper 2.0 really outlays the basics, from picking a niche, choosing keywords, buying a domain to setting up a wordpress website which will generate passive income online.

It’s an extensive guide, but it’s easy to pick up (the walkthrough videos by George help also).

I studied the strategy pretty extensively to start with, and created my first “Sniper” site the next day. I was pretty excited due to the success stories, but still had that common doubt that it would be another blowout.

I made my first bit of commission two weeks later after setting up the site completely. It wasn’t a huge amount but it was something, and that was the trigger to skim through the course once more to see if I could improve my site in anyway.

The site in question started to generate me a tidy amount of commission, and still generates on average $375 a month (on autopilot).

As I’ve been recommended many times before, “if something works duplicate it...” And that’s what I did. I now have about 10 sniper sites, all generating commission each month. Each site differs in the amount of money I’m making, but I can’t squabble as I’m on the hunt for more...

The best thing about this course is alongside earning a nice income each month from this system on autopilot with no traffic generation, it’s also an extensive guide into niche research, finding products to promote and how to set up your own website.

Yes, it may need to be read through a few times, but believe me... It’s worth it.

Affiliate Marketing: Be Careful What You’re Recommending!

I’ll never forget my early days of setting up my first website and branching out into affiliate marketing…. this was in 2007, when most programmes where you could work from home and earn money online on writing sites were US-based – and not open to residents of other countries.

The main reason for this was cross-border payments and Paypal not widely used. Most companies would send a USD check – to residents of the US only.

As I was in the UK, I was letting people know about various websites they could find ways to earn money online – and in one short post I suggested Associated Content.

These posts would contain an affiliate link and I hoped that US readers might sign up and I might end up getting an affiliate payment at some point.

Well, the post hadn’t been on my website more than a couple of weeks before I received the most horrendous, ranting, wild email from some furiously mad UK resident who was incandescent with rage that he’d looked and it was for US residents only. Now,

I’d not said about restrictions, I was simply pointing interested people towards sites they might try/investigate.

It really put the wind up me! I can still remember it to this day …. he was FURIOUS!!! I mean, you have to laugh really, it wasn’t a big deal. No money had changed hands. He’d probably wasted 10 minutes of his life…. and a further 20 minutes to email me… but it did make me scared of reader backlash!

I was reminded of this incident when another writer here on DailyTwoCents said they were considering writing reviews for cash …. and there’s no way I’d do that as the memory of that horrible email haunts me to this day!

Imagine if I’d written a (false) review about some gadget and he’d spent a fortune on it for a special gift! Reviews ….? Not for me!

The Secrets Of The Affiliate Marketing Experts!

Web marketing can be a profitable marketing strategy. The track record of affiliate program use has proven its potential for profits over a number of years.

Given the length of affiliate marketing history and the furious rate of new developments, a substantial body of knowledge exists about it. You might find these tips helpful, no matter if you are a novice or expert affiliate marketer.

Learn how a company tracks orders made off-site before you choose a marketing program. You should ensure that your affiliates have a tracking a method of tracking orders that are not placed online to ensure your commission payments.

TIP! It’s vital that you and your various affiliate marketing partners do not try to take advantage of the visitors with this particular procedure. If nothing else, this will annoy your visitors.

Look for affiliates that can further your business plan not only as partners but also as providers. While you want some diversity in your affiliate network, you also want to connect with companies you truly like and trust. Do some research before choosing which affiliates you will do business with.

Try not to market only extremely popular products. Don’t confuse quality with popularity. Going up against giant competitors, as a small business owner, can be bad for your business. Generating profit can be difficult.

TIP! When venturing into affiliate marketing, it is useful to find and register with affiliates that are able to give you the services and products you want to sell. Joining different programs will provide you with multiple streams of income.

One way to improve you chances of success with affiliate marketing is by looking for a company with a steady stream of products. Work with reputable companies to retain customers and increase profits. Avoid doing business with companies marketing flash-in-the-pan products.

Affiliate Marketing Beginners Should Read This!

If you have had any training in sales, you probably know this tip already. If you have not had any training in sales, you probably do not.

But even highly trained salespeople who are affiliate marketing beginners forget this. I did. So, what is my affiliate marketing tip of the day?

Simply this: Focus on the benefit to the customer, not on the feature of the product. What does this mean practically?

If you are marketing houses, you are marketing shelter from the elements, not wood or bricks.

If you are marketing fences, you are marketing safe kids and dogs or privacy, not white pickets. If you are marketing an investment program, you are marketing future feelings of security, not bigger numbers on a bank statement.

Affiliate marketing beginners, like all sales people, often forget this one simple fact. So with each new article you write, pay close attention to what you say.

Ask yourself, am I describing the features of this product, or am I truly showing the benefits to my readers?

The most important thing is doing this going forward. Don't use this tip or any other as an excuse to edit all your old material without first writing new material.

Remember that content is king. And new content is the king of kings.

If you write new quality content and still have the time to go back over old content, by all means, edit the old content to ensure benefits stand out over features.

But write new content first!

The Role Of Content In Performance Marketing!

February 2011 is perhaps the starting point for any discussion of the current role of content in performance marketing.

Google’s then roll out of the Panda update was the search giant’s first systemic step towards emphasising the value of pure, quality content in terms of its rankings and which penalised what it deemed ‘thin sites’, low on quality and sometimes guilty of ‘black hat’ tactics that attempted to manipulate their way to the top of valuable search queries.

For both advertisers and publishers alike, this was a new dawn and the upshot was that many brands were forced to rethink their approach online, moving content plans to the very core of their online and indeed affiliate strategy.

Whilst the initial rollout saw varying degrees of collateral damage with some unwarranted casualties seeing huge drop-offs in their natural traffic, the update seems to have had the desired effect and forced all digital natives to place a new value on providing content for their audiences that is both relevant and valuable.

This is equally true within the performance marketing channel, and if anything, has arguably added a new legitimacy to an environment which may previously have been seen by some as slightly murky; littered with banner farms, keyword-stuffed review sites and dodgy discount code providers.

Now, to ensure consistent traffic levels, affiliate sites of all persuasions are compelled to think of their audiences rather than their rankings first, and to consider what value they can add to the customer journey.

Though some may always see the repositioning of the search goalposts as a negative, the focus on content by Google has to some extent been a boon to affiliates who are in the perfect position to take advantage of it.

As independent mediators between consumers and brands their notional objectivity and insight is precisely what online users demand during the pre-purchase phase of the customer journey. Content marketing provides the perfect tool for affiliates to exploit this.

It is by no means an easy task, but by producing a consistent stream of relevant, valuable and insightful content on a subject area, affiliates can benefit in various ways. They can develop trust with their audience, engage new traffic niches, foster relationships and generate links and referrals from other authoritative sources.

Content affiliates can also develop their own brand identity and personality, and by doing so encourage the ‘virality’ of the content they share. There is much to be gained, and in a back-to-front kind of way all this can culminate in ever greater performance for both affiliates and the brands they work with.

Invariably the traffic coming their way is more numerous, more qualified and more disposed to converting. The subsequent updates that Google has rolled out since 2011 have sought to refine and extend much of what the original Panda update started.

With an ever more nuanced understanding of what users are searching for online the role of content has changed dramatically and for affiliates and their brand partners it is an essential component of any effective performance marketing relationship.
